Every trait here was placed by hand, one pixel at a time, to rules written down before the first one went in. Nothing was traced, filtered or generated out of a photograph. Here is the whole method, with the frogs to prove it.

Colour is never just darker
Every shade is a hue-shifted ramp: shadows lean cool and richer, highlights lean warm and paler. Flat brightness looks like mud, and here is the difference.

They are alive
Frogs blink, and no two blink together: a hundred patterns, each on its own beat. Smokers give off smoke. Laser eyes breathe.
